Biography

I have been a faculty in the Department of Medicine, Rheumatology Division since 1968. My main area of interest is on the relation between the rheumatic autoimmune diseases and carcinogenesis and my research focuses on the identification of signal transduction molecules involved in the pathogenesis of breast cancer and other solid tumors. Currently, I have several ongoing research projects based on data collected with the support of an Ro1 NIH grant. 1. The effect of diet and other factors on the cross talk between the intestinal microbiome and the immune system in breast cancer. 2. Identification of molecular biomarkers of breast cancer risk in a cohort of healthy women undergoing annual screening mammography. Necessary training to participate in these on going research projects include understanding methods used to clone molecular biomarkers from cDNA libraries and to perform homology searches in databases. Students will be directed to perform focused literature searches and will participate in the process of reporting the results and the analysis of the data. Our program offers a rich research experience useful to understand complex pathogenic mechanisms that could be applied to many important parallel fields in internal medicine.
