Biography

George Yin received a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Delaware in 1983, M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Brown University in 1987. He joined Wayne State University in 1987, and became a professor in 1996. His research interests include stochastic systems and applications. He coauthored 9 research books and numerous refereed journal papers.

He was chair of SIAMĀ  (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) Conference on Control & Its Application, 2011, and co-chair of two AMS-IMS-SIAM [AMS (American Mathematical Society), IMS (Institute of Mathematical Statistics)] Summer Research Conferences; he also chaired a number SIAM prize selection committees. He was chair of SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory, and served on the Board of Directors of American Automatic Control Council; he also served on numerous technical and conference committees forĀ  IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control).

He is editor-in-chief of SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, senior editor of IEEE Control Systems Letters, associate editor for applied mathematics and optimization; and on the editorial boards of over 20 other journals and book series. He is a fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of IFAC and SIAM.

Research Description

His research interests include stochastic systems theory, applied probability, stochastic processes, stochastic recursive algorithms, system identication, signal processing, and control and optimization. He has authored or coauthored over 190 refereed journal papers. He coauthored with Harold J. Kushner the book Stochastic Approximation and Recursive Algorithms and Applications, and with Qing Zhang the book Continuous-Time Markov Chains and Applications: A Singular Perturbation Approach, and the book Discrete-time Markov Chains: Two-time-scale Methods and Applications; all three books have been published in the Springer\'s prestigious series Applications of Mathematics. In addition, he has coauthored a textbook with colleagues from Russia, Lithuania, Germany, and Finland; he is also the coeditor of seven other research books. He has been an invited speaker of many conferences, workshops, and seminars.
